Poorly soluble drugs
At Recipharm, our team employs a range of solubility enhancement techniques, such as pH-adjustments, co-solvents, surfactants and complexation with cyclodextrins, to help customers achieve formulations with enhanced properties.
Many new molecules entering the drug pipeline have a poor solubility and/or slow dissolution rate. This often causes problems like poor and variable bioavailability as well as slow onset of the intended therapeutic effect.
There are a number of options available that allow skilled formulators to address these problems.
Choosing the right excipients is important for poorly soluble compounds. For example, amorphisation of the drug substance is one way to improve bioavailability of poorly soluble compounds. Our team can prepare amorphous drug substances through small-scale spray drying and then increase dissolution rate by micronisation in a jet mill or by wet milling.
Optimised excipient selection
At every stage of the formulation process, we are dedicated to ensuring that your development pathway is as efficient as possible.
We recognise that low aqueous solubility of drug molecules is a major challenge in the development of liquid formulations. This has driven the need for new and efficient methods in selecting solubilising excipients.
Recipharm’s formulation team has introduced our proprietary HTS (high-throughput screening) platform for solubility testing to help you achieve the optimum formulation for your molecule faster than ever.
Our HTS approach overcomes the challenges of manual techniques by rapidly identifying the solubilisation capacity and stability of a compound in a range of excipients.
The automated process allows us to perform multiple tests simultaneously to provide conclusive information about your compound’s solubility and stability, ensuring your target drug dosage profiles are reached.

Amorphous formulation development
Recipharm’s solubility enhancement service helps drug developers use amorphous formulations to increase the bioavailability of poorly soluble APIs (active pharmaceutical ingredients).
Amorphous formulation development is an emerging bioavailability enhancement technique. It is a cost-effective means of turning promising yet hard to formulate drug candidates into effective medicines.
