During the discovery and early stages of drug development the pharmacology, pharmacokinetics and toxicology of a compound are evaluated using a simple liquid formulation. However, low aqueous solubility can prove to be a major obstacle when it comes to the development of liquid formulations, so selecting the right excipients to help solubilise them is vital.

Low aqueous solubility can prove to be a major obstacle when it comes to the development of liquid formulations.

Traditionally, the most common approach to identifying the most appropriate excipients is a manual method involving trial and error, which can be time-consuming and costly due to the amount of active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) required for testing. Recipharm’s formulation scientists have developed a new high throughput screening method to improve the efficiency of screening an excipient’s solubilisation capacity and reduce the amount of API required to achieve results.

One of the formulation scientists involved, Amjad Alhalaweh PhD, discusses this new method in more detail, the importance of understanding the stability and solubility of a compound and the benefits compared to more traditional methods with World Pharma Today

Amjad also took part in a Drug Delivery webinar with in-Pharma Technologist on Thursday 20th April, 2017, you can watch the webinar here.
