Over the years, there has been a shift in focus for drug formulators. The FDA expects the needs of the patient to be considered when developing new drug products, meaning today, the focus on the overall patient experience is a priortity.

Each different dosage form has a different impact on the patient and their ability to take medications effectively. For example, orally disintegrating tablets (ODTs) and other fast-dissolving oral dosage forms can improve both patient compliance and safety.

This is primarily because ODTs and fast-dissolving products are an extremely convinient drug form – they dissolve quickly and can be mixed in with different foods. In addition, they can offer improved efficacy as a result of the sublingual delivery which can ultimately lead to increased bioavailability for poorly soluble APIs.
