Now that 2023 has arrived, there are several key trends from 2022 to reflect on that will continue to shape the pharmaceutical industry this year and beyond.
The demand for pre-filled syringes (PFS) increased significantly in 2022, and this growth is projected to continue into 2023 and beyond.
This spike in demand can be attributed to the growing number of biologics in the development pipeline that require parenteral delivery, thus necessitating aseptic processing.
The convenience benefits of PFS devices make them increasingly popular with pharmaceutical companies. This is due to the fact that they are already filled with the correct dose, simplifying administration by both healthcare professionals and patients alike.
However, 2022 has highlighted that there is a need to increase the production and capability of these PFSs to meet industry demands.
There is also greater interest in other delivery methods such as oral and inhalation for biologic drugs, but pharmaceutical companies face additional challenges in bringing these to market, such as ensuring regulatory compliance, overcoming drug product formulation issues, and meeting device customisation requirements for these biologics.
To ensure the success of these projects in the coming years, it’s crucial for these companies to seek expert help in the early stages of development to increase their chances of success.
